Slovenia strengthens future opportunities in Moldova

21. 8. 2025

Through the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Republic of Slovenia, the Republic of Slovenia is financially supporting a sustainable project "Sustainable Hydro-Electric Project for Aquatic Restoration &
Agricultural Support
" to restore water resources and provide agricultural support in Cantemir. This project will improve the quality of life for nearly 5,000 people and strengthen the region's sustainable development.

In the Moldovan region of Cantemir, residents currently experience significant issues with access to drinking water and reliable water sources for agriculture. Climate change is causing increasingly frequent droughts and floods, while the main water source — the Cantemir lake — is degraded and polluted. Old and inefficient infrastructure threatens access to safe drinking water, as well as local agricultural production, which depends on irrigation. This affects nearly 5,000 people, including 636 households and 1,300 apartments, as well as local farmers.

The project involves the restoration of the lake through sediment cleaning and the establishment of a filtration and aeration system to improve water quality.

The project will also involve the construction of new rainwater reservoirs and an irrigation system for 20 hectares of land to strengthen local agricultural production.

Solar panels will be installed to produce more than 52,000 kWh of energy annually and reduce CO₂ emissions.

Seven hectares of green areas will be arranged around the lake to create a healthier and more pleasant environment.

An educational programme will be provided for 100 farmers, and awareness will be raised among 500 community members on the sustainable use of natural resources.

This project increases the resilience of Cantemir residents to climate change, improves their quality of life and creates conditions for the region's long-term sustainable development.
